Auto-Generate Commodity Key Codes

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

Generate a virtual map of a supplier network to enable capacity forecasting, risk analysis, and the automation of tasks such as sourcing, RFQs, and PO creation. This map will link the requirements from the organization's mechanical drawings (CAD) to the manufacturers who can meet those requirements.

How?

  1. Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) is extracted from the mechanical drawings, categorized and stored as a Commodity Key Code

  2. A supplier capability form is generated, based on the extracted PMI

  3. Decision trees map each part, and all future parts, to the appropriate supplier(s)

Step (1) - Extracting the Product Manufacturing Information

Our system extracts the PMI from the CAD drawing and saves the results as structured data

Next, extracted PMI is used to generate Commodity Key Code Identifiers

Commodity Key Code Identifiers are generated in two ways:

  1. Through simple logic conditions for the main identifiers

    1. Example: IF welding callout is extracted from drawing, set welding to (1) TRUE, ELSE set welding to (0) FALSE

  2. By auto-generating parent categories for PMI extracts, such as raw material, and assigning a numerical value as a parent code, then assigning an additional numerical value as a child code

    1. Example:

Parent Code

Metal

Child Code

Grade

1

Aluminum

3

6061-T6

1

Aluminum

4

6061-T651

2

Silicon

9

Silicon Dioxide (SiO2)

2

Silicon

10

Silicon Nitride (Si3N4)

3

Copper

13

Copper Alloy 102 (C102)

3

Copper

14

Copper Alloy 117 (C117)

6

Tungsten

23

Tungsten-Silicide (WSi)

6

Tungsten

24

Tungsten-Nitride (WN)

Having assigned numerical values to the PMI extracts, the actual Commodity Key Codes are now generated

Header Key Code: 1 . 1 . 2
Fabrication Key Code: 6-69 . 15-154
Material Key Code: 1-6 . 1-14

Step (2) - Generating the Vendor's Capabilities Input Form

Aggregating all PMI extracts across the organization’s entire part library, a vendor capabilities form is generated, to be populated by supply chain or vendor. The vendor capabilities will enable the connection between manufacturing requirement and vendor capability.

Here is a sample form:

Step (3) - Mapping manufacturing requirements to vendor using decision trees

After a vendor capability form is populated, the system generates a large series of Commodity Key Codes each supplier is capable of meeting.

When the Commodity Key Codes generated off a drawing extract matches a supplier’s capability, a match has been made.
